I would like to give thanks to Dino702 for this write up & giving me permission to post it here for us. Thank you!!

1. Mercury - 95 North exit Mercury go under fwy to parking area through fence opening. Trails start from there and go through the mountains north toward Pahrump.

2. Nelson Hills - 93 South from Railroad Pass past the Dry lake turn left at the Nelson turn off go maybe six miles and turn right on power line road and close the gate behind you go another mile or so to open parking area where the big hill climbs are.

3. Knob Hill - 93 South past Nelson turn off about six miles look to your left and you'll see a long straight dirt road known as Grandpa's Rd. or the Nelson Cuttoff Rd. Stay to the right when the road forks this road will lead you to a power line road turn right and this will take you to Knob Hill. Yes you can ride to Knob Hill from Nelson Hills if you know the way.

4. Jean - I-15 South to the Sloan turn off continue south on the old L.A. hwy. until you see the dry lake then look for a paved road that leads down to the south edge of the lakebed.

5. Goodsprings - I-15 south Jean/ Goodsprings exit go west to the first (power line road) or foothills on your right or go all the way to the Goodsprings bypass/ Kingston Road (not the Sandy Valley Road) about two miles past the town and park off of Kingston Rd. Oh and don't forget to stop by the Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings to wash the dust down after riding.

6. Ute Road - First turn off past Valley of Fire turn off on I-15 North take road north east a few miles you will go through a slot canyon parking is less than a 1/4 mile after that.

7. North Apex - I-15 North take Apex exit go under the fwy and north on the frontage rd. for a couple of miles turn right at fwy over pass rd. ( Pabco Rd.)This road crosses a couple of R.R. tracks also and is paved all the way to East Lake Mead Blvd. but you want to park about four or five miles after you go over the I-15 over pass.

8. Logandale Trails - county/ BLM maintained trail system that starts from the town of Logandale that’s I-15 North to the Logandale/ Overton exit trails are accessed from Liston Rd. in Logandale. Awesome red sandstone camping, sand riding, great for quads. http://logandaletrails.org/Topical1.pdf

9. Hell's Half Acre (Alamo) - I-15 North to 93 North just past the town of Alamo and just before Ash Springs there is a dirt road to your right that leads to an old landing strip that is now used for a staging area to access the area trails.

10. Dutchman’s Pass - 93 South from Railroad pass Casino down toward the Dry Lake. Stage at the lakebed or turn west (before the Dry lake) at the gravel pit road and go up to the dirt road that is in front of the gravel pit and turn left and go around to where the two mountains make a pass "Dutchman’s Pass" really cool technical single track (kind of like Nelson but smaller) through the hills and connected with washes on the opposite side of the mountain from the dry lake bed.

Hey Charlie...................

Here's some photos of the some of the areas Dino posted for some idea of the terrain. Ute is where the Jackrabbits run a lot. I'd be glad to host a ride for you guys out there sometime, maybe a "dirt daze" meet and greet sometime? I did this as a "local races" write up over on KTMTalk to answer some first-timer questions, I've got some Nelson Hills photos below. Hope this helps you guys out.

MRAN Courses....................

Well................generally.

January 27th & 28th, Gamblers: This one is out at the Jean dry lake, MILES and MILES of whoops. I wadded up out here a couple years back and broke some ribs, so I think I'll pass this year..............

Here's a few shots for an idea of the area:

February 17th, Wild Bunch / Jackrabbits: This is my clubs race (along with the Wildbunch), and it's going to be one of the toughest 100 miles you've ever seen! I've ran 65 miles worth of it marking course, and at speed there is no place to relax..............

Here's a few shots for an idea of the area:
(You can see the pink ribbon we mark course with in some of these, you should be able to see two ribbons ahead most of the time).

March 24th & 25th , Yucca Chuckers: This should be out at Alamo. A good fun, varied course. Single track, washes, roads, a good first race and should be about 70 miles. If you can ride comfortably around this area you can do this. It will be my son's second race, and probably my first of this season.

April 21st, SNDR: Not sure where this will be this year? Maybe out at Mercury. Fast desert with a LOT of rocks and tight washes.

June 16th, Coyotes: This should be up in Ely. Nice mt. single track, washes, fast rough stuff through the trees. If it's wet its really nice, if its dry it gets dusty.

June 30th, Groundshakers: They are reviving the old "Clover Creek GP" and it should be epic! It will probably start in town at the park by the fire station, head out toward or into the river, out into the desert, and around back into town to do a little "street racing" back to the park. Depending on the leaders, 3 to 5 loops at 12 - 20 miles. This used to be another favorite of mine...........

September 15th, Bushwackers: They'll be up in Pioche. It should be a lot like the Ely race, but less trees..................

October 13th & 14th, Claim Jumpers: This is a "Desert GP", and is my favorite race of the season! They put on a great show! You start on the 1/2 of the MX track, dump out into the desert, run through the streets of town-front and back yards-garages, back out into the desert, and then finish a lap on the other 1/2 of the MX track. Depending on the leaders, it will be 3 - 5 laps at 10 to 15 miles a loop. This was my son's first race last year, and mine back in '04. It's a great place to start. There are so many classes you could easily ride 2 - 3 bike classes, 2 - 3 quad classes, a team race, and an adult 50 race.............

Here's a few shots for an idea of the area:
(In one of these you can se the back side of a course marker [wrong way "W"], the front is flourescent pink with a black arrow for straight / right / left).

November 3rd & 4th, Darkside: This will be out at Nelson, and they have a reputation of putting on as tough a race as we do............... Out there you can expect steep hills, lots of single track, some waterfalls (and if we have snow, some will be flowing), but you've rode out there and know what I mean.

Classes..............

Velosapiens shamed me into starting out in the amature class (mid or "B" level) since I used to race a lot 20 years ago. At least in the Over-45 class that I run, there's a bunch of fast guys, and the best I can hope for is mid-pack. I'm having great fun "racing to finish". You can look at it as an organized trail ride (OK, for some a fast organized trail ride), with the course marked for direction - dangers - pits (where other club members / friend / wives / kids / some guy from D Street etc.) will pour gas for you. If you break, someone makes sure you get back to the pits. It's a good bunch of folks, who will help you any way they can. The only "commitment" is the pressure you put on yourself. I've got where I pick the races I want to run, and build slowly from there. I'm in it for fun, can't afford to get hurt, (but it happens, what can you do?), but I try to keep in mind that I'm "racing" for the fun of it..............

The races start with the faster classes and the faster guys up front (like open expert, 250 expert, etc), with the "slower" classes (the old guys like me) towards the back.

So..........
I'd advise running novice in what ever class seems to fit (four stroke / age class / bike size / etc.) to start. If you are fast enough you will move up. If not, you'll probably still get to pass me..............

Costs..........
You don't have to be a club member to race, but the club support helps. Our club doesn't have dues, but you are kinda' expected to mark course or work the race each year. You get "bonus points" over non-members for those reasons at the end of the year. Numbers are assinged randomly when you start out. After that you can get your "earned number" or keep the one you have, I've been 37c sine I started. My son asked for 101(high enough that no one "earned" it, so it was "open") and he gets the f for fourstroke under 300cc so he's 101f.

MRAN costs $40 a year, with a second class or division (Desert or GP for example) for an additional $10 a piece. The races run about the same, at $40 a race, with a second (or more) class for $10. As an example at Searchlight this year it was $40 to run Over 45, $10 for the "Poker run" (I got a stinkin' pair), and another $10 to run Fourstrokes with my son. A great weekend of Friday - Saturday - Sunday riding!

Help any? Clear as mud?

If you guys are thinking about a "first race" I can't say enough good things about the Searchlight GP!

They usually let you practice at least the start (the MX course) and sometimes let you ride the whole track on Friday. The loops run from 10 to 15 miles, and always end up right back where they started at. You will get to ride a little bit of everything off road racing has to offer, and have the chance to do it in several different classes..................

The nice thing about this is your family and friends get to see you go by several times throughout the race. Most times they will just get to see you leave, and then a few hours later see you finish, with no contact in between. Or, as in my case, maybe that works out better, then theres no witnesses with cameras when I wad up!

Here's the flyer for the next MRAN race, which is this weekend:

Image

I had planned on running it, but things are kinda' falling apart at the last minute here.............

BUT! That might leave the morning open to do the Logandale ride with you guys, so maybe there is a silver lining in my cloud yet!

There's a lot of good information about the race on the MRAN Pit Board: http://mranracing.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl with about 5 pages so far. MRAN site is: http://mranracing.org/framefiles/mransite.html and there's good info there to.

Basically it costs $45 a year for your racing licence, and you can add other classes / bikes for $10 an addition (for example you could run 250 class, maybe 45 Years and Older, and Fourstrokes, using the same bike or three different ones) for $65. Most of the races are $40 to $50 to enter, and on multi day races you can add other class for $5 to $15. For example last year at Searchlight I ran the class I compete in (45+ Amature), Fourstrokes, and the Poker Run. This cost $45 to enter, pluss $10 for one class, and anothe $10 for a third class. This let me race Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.............

Take a look at my post above. It was a quick answer to another guy like you who was thinking about trying to start out with a little "fun racing". I'm not really burning up the desert, but having a lot of fun!

Here's an update on Alamo.

This year they ran the section on the South side of the road, called "Hell's Half Acre" which is a giant boulder hill. Some years they run it downhill, some years they run it uphill.....................

Here's a few pictures of the tougher of the two courses they run out there:

That looks similar to the goat trail at Jean that Charlie and Robbie took me on my first time back riding a dirt bike... and a 2-stroke 250 at that.
